about

Here's my take on Gus Cannon's Poor Boy Long Ways From Home. The original recording is from 1927 and is one of the very first slide bottleneck pieces recorded for Guitar, the transcription is taken from Woody Mann's Bottleneck Blues Guitar. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed playing it, the song is quite apt for me now as I seem to spend a lot of time away from home in various hotels! :-) Includes a tab to help you learn the song.

lyrics

Been a poor boy and a long way from home, long ways from home.
Been a poor boy and a long way from home,
Well I got arrested no money to buy my fine, money to buy my fine.
I got arrested no money to buy my fine.

Said, I guess I'll have to catch the Frisco out in this land,
Catch the 'Frisco out.
Lord, I guess I'll have to catch the 'Frisco out.

Then if that don't do it, I'm going into woods a while,
try the woods a while.
If...

I cried "Hello central, gimme, your long distance phone,"
I cried "Hello central, gimme, your long distance phone,"

She asked me what number did I want,

I cried please Mam gimme thirteen forty nine. Thirteen forty,
I cried please Mam gimme thirteen forty nine.

Tried to phone home to my...
Tried to phone home to my...
Tried to phone home to my...

Told her send me a little,
Told her send me a little money,
Told her send me a little money,
For her to buy my fine.

She cried, "The bucket's got a...
She cried, "The bucket's got a...
She cried, "The bucket's got a...
Bucket won't hold no beer."

I take influence from old blues artists like Blind Willie Johnson through to alternative rockers like Placebo.
